Care for Life's Family Preservation Program is a holistic, goal-setting, education-based program that works to end poverty at the family and community level. The Family Preservation Program is consistent with the UN’s sustainable development goals, and also successfully incorporates the IACD’s suggested principles for an effective community development program by approaching education, health and hygiene, food security and nutrition, sanitation, income generation, home improvement, and psychosocial well-being in a coordinated way. The program has a deeply personal impact and creates long-lasting and sustainable change. Nothing is done for people that they can do for themselves and nothing is given that people can earn for themselves, thus avoiding a culture of dependency.

In 2023, two more communities graduated from the program, making the total villages that have graduated 33. We also added 2 new communities, making our total active village numbers participating 4. This represents over 36,00 people who have participated in our program. Our goal is to take the program globally so that more people are impacted. We are exploring new areas to begin the program and look forward to future expansion.
All funds were received through individual donors and foundations. We did receive a large, unexpected donation from an estate this past year, and we are working to use the funds to set up an endowment and further fund our expansion efforts.
We are working with approximately 1200 families in four villages. Inflation costs are impacting every family and their ability to survive. These inflation costs have also affected our organizational budget.
We have a partnership with DVV International and have developed a literacy program focused on agriculture and income generation. We have been able to combine their focus on literacy with our focus on agriculture and income generation, allowing those who are illiterate to gain knowledge in multiple areas that impact their lives.

We are developing a new training program designed to help indigenous organizations learn the core principles of the Family Preservation Program. This project will allow small organizations the opportunity to implement best practices to their programs and use the most pertinent pieces of the Family Preservation Program in their projects.

Within Guatemala, we are currently in Stage 3 of organizing and assessing the needs of the people, which includes securing funding. Guatemala has the 4th highest malnutrition rate in the world and the highest in Latin America and the Caribbean. During a recent trip to Guatemala, our Care for Life directors and other volunteers were invited to visit a local community. When the village leaders heard that representatives from Care for Life would be visiting, they gathered the people together and spoke of the responsibility that they, as a community, had to each other. They spoke of hard work and commitment. They spoke of families and neighbors working together to fix the problems they are facing. Before sunrise, the entire community gathered together and walked for hours to meet our team on the road. This is dedication. We believe in the Family Preservation Program and more importantly, so do the families we are working with. Together we will alleviate suffering, promote self reliance, and instill hope throughout Guatemala.
